Skye and her book collection.

One of our family traditions is to collect gently used children’s books during a birthday celebration.  This year for Skye’s fifth birthday we did another round of book collecting.  Not only is it a fun and easy activity for the party goers, but it also feels good and can be a wonderful learning opportunity for little ones.  We send our books to the African Library Project.  There are thousands of organizations supporting children’s causes worldwide. Whether you are looking for an organization to support ongoing, or a one-time fundraiser at your school, or a service- learning opportunity, here are five organizations that I really like:

The Global Fund for Children has been supporting non-profits around the world that work on various children’s issues.  They are an incubator for non-profit organizations and they also publish books on various children’s issues.  Donations as little as $20 go a long way with this organization!

Interested in supporting education locally and internationally?  Room to Read works in collaboration with communities and local governments across Asia and Africa to develop literacy and life skills for girls living in some of the most underserved communities globally.  Locally you can support projects in your community schools through Donors Choose

For as little as $20 you can send a bike to a girl in the developing world.  Check out 88bikes.  The 88bikes Foundation endows bicycles to girls throughout the world, especially the heroic survivors of human trafficking.  They partner with vetted, locally-run NGOs, purchase bicycles from local vendors, hire local labor and connect each survivor one-to-one with her donor.

You don’t have to search very far and you will find children in need in your local community.  Here in Redwood City there is the Inn Vision Shelter Network that manages temporary housing for families in transition.  They welcome any kind of donation including gently used children’s clothing, toys and furniture.  You don’t have to travel far to make an impact and by teaching our children to give back they will learn an invaluable lesson of caring, giving and being grateful.
